Event Details

In 8 BC, the month of August was renamed after Augustus Caesar to honor the first Roman emperor. The month was also lengthened from 30 to 31 days, so that the days in August equaled Julius Caesar’s month of July. The extra day was taken from the month of February. Previously named Sextilis in Latin, it was the sixth month of the Roman calendar. And that, my friends, is how you rest on your laurels! August is also related to the word “auger”, a hole digging tool, because farmers dug for next season at this time every year.
