Fill in the Cracks: KNU Sidewalk Grant Program

Sidewalks play an important role in community life by providing connection to our neighbors and our great neighborhood parks. They are the conduits for pedestrian movement, enhance connectivity, improve home values and promote exercise.

Approximately 40% of the residential sidewalks in Kessler Park need repair or replacement. Not only are these sidewalks unattractive, they are a potential personal liability for the property owner.

According to a City of Dallas ordinance, the adjacent property owner is responsible for all the repairs and replacement of sidewalks and drive approaches when they become defective, unsafe or hazardous. Good news is that the City of Dallas has a sidewalk replacement cost share program. The City will secure all permits and split the cost of the sidewalk removal and replacement 50/50 with the homeowner. The homeowner is responsible for 100% of the cost of the drive approach removal and replacement.

More good news… Kessler Neighbors United is starting a new sidewalk replacement grant program, to further help homeowners replace sidewalks and to enhance our public spaces. The KNU grant program works in cooperation with the City of Dallas replacement program. More specifically, the City of Dallas will pay for 50% of the total cost to replace the sidewalk, a KNU grant will pay 25% of the cost up to $500, and the homeowner is responsible for paying the balance. Grants will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.

To be eligible for the program, your property must be an owner-occupied, single-family property with existing sidewalks in need of repair or replacement within Kessler Neighbors United. Funds are subject to availability, the cost to repair drive approaches is the property owner’s 100% responsibility, and no KNU funds apply to tree removal.
