What on Earth?

The “green things growing” whisper me; Of many an earth-old mystery. –Eben Eugene Rexford (19th century Am. Writer, poet & lyricist)

Celebrate Earth Day 2019 on April 22nd by consciously breathing in fresh air, planting your feet in the dirt, or searching for emerging wildflowers and green moss. Just go outside in the natural world, even if it’s raining…

Ever wondered how Earth Day started? This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. In 1970, San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration. McConnell chose the spring equinox (March 21, 1970) and Nelson chose April 22. Millions of people participated, and today, Earth Day continues to be widely celebrated.

Below are a few suggested Earth Day activities:

  • Plant wildflowers!
  • Go native! Plants thrive best when they’re natural to your area.
  • Add plants to your garden or pots that attract butterflies and attract hummingbirds!
  • Invite native bees to your environs with select plantings. You enjoy more flowers and food when bees pollinate!
  • Start an organic vegetable garden.
  • Conserve water!
  • Clean up your community by organizing a group to pick up litter in a local park or roadway.
  • Cut back on plastic consumption! Check out local recycling programs.
  • Are you sensing good vibrations from Mother Earth!?! Well, that’s because National Parks Week and Arbor Day also fall in the month of April.
